The 2026 Winter Olympics have captured the world’s attention over the past several weeks. Athletes and spectators have traveled from across the globe to celebrate sport at its highest level. With events spread across Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Northern Italy has come alive with competition, culture, and excited fans from around the world.

The Olympics truly bring the world together, and the data proves it. Using Aireon’s global AireonINSIGHTS Flight Events product, Aireon has tracked a remarkable surge in international aviation activity since the start of 2026 through the Olympic Games.

Over the past two months, airports across the Milan-Cortina region have welcomed aircraft from more than 800 different locations from over 100 countries, a more than 65% increase compared to the same period in 2025. During the two-week games, daily traffic between the Northern Italy airports surged by almost 50% compared to the previous month.

Graphic: Map showing the global air traffic heading into Northern Italy airports in February.

While single-day events like the Super Bowl tend to drive sharp, short-lived spikes in traffic, Aireon’s data shows a more sustained pattern for the Olympics, with approximately a 10% average increase in daily flight traffic across the region throughout February compared to January.

In terms of traffic composition, 65% of flights are commercial passenger services, while 30% consist of VIP, business aviation, general aviation, and helicopter operations. The remaining 5% is made up of other traffic, including cargo and military flights.

This year, I had the opportunity to attend two Electronic Flight Bag Users Forums hosted by ARINC – one in Montreal in June and another in Miami in November. Both reinforced just how central EFBs have become to day-to-day flight operations.

What began as a digital replacement for paper manuals has turned into a deeply integrated cockpit workspace. Today, pilots routinely use ten or more EFB applications to handle everything from flight planning and charts to performance calculations, weather, manuals, and communications. EFBs are no longer optional add-ons; they are mission-critical tools that airlines depend on to deliver reliable, real-time, safety-enhancing information throughout every phase of flight.

Joe B. at the EFB Users Forum.

As the world’s only global, space-based ADS-B surveillance provider, Aireon offers 100% worldwide coverage across all types of terrain, including oceanic and remote regions. Having this complete, real-time picture of global aircraft movements was a major part of the discussions I had with operators, OEMs, and developers at both forums.

In 2025, Aireon introduced two new capabilities that align directly with themes raised by operators, OEMs and EFB developers:

  • GNSS Interference Detection and Position Assurance
  • By leveraging space-based ADS-B, Aireon can identify GNSS anomalies and independently validate an aircraft’s position, even during GPS jamming or spoofing events. This data adds resilience and confidence in environments where navigation performance may be degraded.
  • Global Turbulence Detection from ADS-B
  • Aireon now derives turbulence information using real-time ADS-B vertical rate data from more than 15,000 aircraft in flight at any given moment. The result is a continuous, global turbulence picture without relying on dedicated onboard sensors.

Both capabilities are designed to integrate directly into EFB platforms, either through airline systems or via direct app integration. This was a recurring theme at both forums, where operators emphasized the need for dependable data sources that improve situational awareness and support better operational decisions.

Both forums had similar key takeaways: EFBs are quickly becoming the primary workflow environment for pilots, and the need for high-quality operational data continues to grow.

Aireon is well positioned to support this transformation. With global ADS-B surveillance and new value-added products like turbulence and GNSS interference detection, we are helping operators, OEMs, and app developers bring richer insight directly into the cockpit.

I’m looking forward to returning to the ARINC EFB Users Forums in 2026 and continuing the conversation with those working to bring the next generation of aviation data into flight operations.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) and Aireon LLC today announced a strategic collaboration to deploy Aireon’s space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) data for air traffic surveillance across the oceanic sector of the Kuala Lumpur Flight Information Region (FIR). This initiative marks a major milestone in strengthening Malaysia’s air traffic management capabilities and enhancing operational safety and efficiency across one of the world’s busiest international air corridors.

The Aireon and CAAM teams mark the new partnership at this week’s Airspace Asia Pacific.

Aireon, in partnership with its local partner ClearWisdom, signed the agreement at this week’s Airspace Asia Pacific event in Hong Kong. The agreement includes Aireon’s EASA-certified space-based ADS-B data covering the oceanic service volume of the Kuala Lumpur FIR West Region. This includes a substantial portion of the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, a critical corridor for flights connecting Asia and the Middle East.

Malaysia plays a pivotal role in the safe management of this region, surrounded by Jakarta FIR (Indonesia) to the south, Chennai FIR (India) to the west, and Singapore FIR to the east. Several regional air navigation service providers (ANSPs) including the Airports Authority of India and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines have already adopted Aireon’s data services, contributing to greater interoperability and regional cooperation.

“Thank you to CAAM for entrusting Aireon to bring space-based ADS-B data to Malaysia,” said Peter Cabooter, Aireon Executive Vice President of Customer Affairs. “Air traffic in the region is poised to grow strongly in the coming years, and Malaysia is responding strongly by investing in safety for the airspace.”

“The implementation of Aireon’s space-based ADS-B service represents a key milestone in strengthening Malaysia’s air traffic surveillance capabilities, particularly over the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. This enhancement will support safer, more efficient airspace operations and aligns with CAAM’s continuous efforts to modernize Malaysia’s air traffic management system and advance regional collaboration,” said Dato’ Captain Norazman Bin Mahmud, CEO of CAAM.

The integration of space-based ADS-B forms part of CAAM’s long-term plan to modernise surveillance infrastructure and improve situational awareness in remote and oceanic airspace where ground-based radar is limited. This collaboration will support Malaysia’s commitments under ICAO’s Global Air Navigation Plan (GANP), enabling enhanced safety, reduced separation standards, more efficient routing, and improved environmental outcomes.

Safety is at the core of everything that we do at Aireon. Since the company’s inception, Aireon has gone the extra mile to demonstrate the safety of our service to the aviation community.

Aireon provides Space-Based ADS-B data as an Air Navigation Service (ANS), known as our Global Air Traffic Surveillance (ATS) Service. This had never been done before, so the company was forging a new path in terms of certification and data integrity. Consequently, as Aireon was preparing to launch our pioneering space-based automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) service in 2019, the company identified the need for independent certification and validation to signify the mission-critical nature of the data the company was providing.

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) was identified as the path for validation. EASA provides Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) with a certificate, which verifies a service provider’s compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.

In 2017, Aireon voluntarily began the rigorous process of EASA certification. In the initial evaluation, the company underwent a series of investigations, inspections, assessments, audits, and reviews – the same processes ANSPs must undergo. In the end, Aireon’s initial certification was awarded in 2019. Aireon is the only service provider of its type in the world to hold certification from EASA. We hold ourselves to the same standard that our ANSP customers are held to by their regulators. And Aireon takes that responsibility very seriously.

But the commitment to safety and to EASA doesn’t end with the initial certification. Aireon, like its ATS customers, is subject to regular audits and inspections to ensure it remains in compliance with EASA regulations.

“The EASA certification was a critical component of our Safety Mission at the beginning. Our ongoing work with EASA underscores our continuous commitment to safety and data integrity for the aviation industry,” said Vinny Capezzuto, Aireon Chief of Operations. “We were the first, and are still the only, certified provider of this data in the world.”

Those assessments include organizational aspects – including operating procedures, personnel competency, contingency plans, and occurrence reporting & investigations – and functional system oversight – including demonstration of the safety of the services, documented in the corresponding safety case.

Ultimately, it is a continuous certification, but one that speaks volumes to the high quality of the Aireon service and creates a backing of trust for those relying on this data for safety-of-life services.

For more information on Aireon’s safety mission, visit: Data Products and Services for the Global Aviation Industry.

November 12 marks International Air Traffic Safety Electronics Personnel (ATSEP) Day, recognizing the vital contributions of the specialists who install, design, maintain, and support the ground-based electronic and software systems essential to air navigation and air traffic management worldwide.

At Aireon, our team — together with our partners at L3Harris and Iridium — includes 82 ATSEP professionals. Aireon ATSEP personnel provide product surveillance, data processing, system monitoring, and system control support to maintain the integrity and reliability of Aireon’s services. Each ATSEP professional plays a key role in supporting our global customers’ safety and operational objectives through Aireon’s ADS-B data services.

Aireon’s competence standards require all ATSEPs to be fully trained and certified before assuming their roles. Competence standards vary depending on the role, referred to as the ATSEP rating or endorsement. Aireon currently oversees 15 distinct ratings and endorsements, including those held by contracted personnel. This commitment to excellence is reinforced through ongoing education, development initiatives, and annual certification renewals to ensure continued proficiency and performance.

All new hires identified as ATSEP personnel are enrolled in the online ATSEP Basic Training program. This training introduces new employees to Aireon’s technology, safety and security practices, Aireon Integrated Management System (AIMS), and other key topics. New hires are given 30 days to complete this phase.

Following the completion of basic training, each new ATSEP is paired with an On-the-Job Training Instructor (OJTI) to develop role-specific qualification skills. This includes training in software, hardware, processes, procedures, checklists, and other operational competencies. The duration of qualification training varies based on the complexity of the role and other factors, as determined by the functional area leadership.

Upon completion of both the basic and qualification training phases, the ATSEP’s competence is evaluated under the oversight of a certified Competence Assessor. This assessment includes written, oral, and practical demonstrations of skill. To pass and receive an endorsement, an ATSEP must achieve a score of 80% or higher.

As ATSEPs hold positions of public trust, they undergo annual competence assessments to validate ongoing proficiency. These evaluations ensure continued compliance with Aireon standards and provide assurance to our customers and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

“To me, being an ATSEP professional means helping aviation professionals and customers all around the world,” said Aireon Service Desk Technician Adam Abuelhawa.

“Our ATSEPs are a key asset in Aireon, because they play a vital role in ensuring the continued viability of our ongoing mission: to accelerate enhancements in safety, efficiency, and environmental responsibility for the aviation industry through innovations using our global, precise aviation and surveillance data. Thank you to each and every one of you, for the care and attention you bring to work. It is much appreciated!” said Aireon Vice President, Safety & Compliance, Mike Boyd.
